CVUSD BOARD MEETING: THURS, JUL 20
The proposed Parental Notification Policy going up for vote on Thursday, July 20th targets trans youth in our district. It strips them of their right to come out on their terms. Students and community members are organizing to speak out against this dangerous policy at the school board meeting. You can help by checking out the info below.

Board president Sonja Shaw is proposing a new policy that would require staff to alert a student’s parent/guardian if they request to use a different name or set of pronouns at school.
"Revealing a student’s gender identity or expression to others may compromise the student’s safety. Thus, preserving a student’s privacy is of the utmost importance."
- CA Department of Education
Outing someone is never okay, and CVUSD has no right to violate the privacy of students. This policy is a direct attack on trans students in our district and is extremely dangerous.
Why should I care?

ONLY A FRACTION OF TRANS YOUTH FEEL ACCEPTED AT HOME.
If a trans student isn't out at home for safety reasons, school could be the only place they feel accepted.
roughly half of trans youth feel accepted at school.

Those that do have lower rates of suicide attempts. For trans kids with unsupportive homes, school can be a lifeline.
ONE THIRD OF QUEER YOUTH FEEL THEIR MENTAL HEALTH IS NEGATIVELY IMPACTED BY ANTI-LGBTQ POLICIES & LEGISLATION.

Our district is no place for policies that are harmful to our students' mental health.

Meetings can run long. It’s a good idea to bring a charged phone, water, and snacks!

Meetings are recorded and posted on youtube. In general, the seats on left side of the room are not within shot of the camera.
Public Commenting
Public commenting is an opportunity for you to share your voice directly to the board at meetings.
Fill out and turn in a comment card. The agenda item # is II.A.1
Walk to the podium when you hear your name called and adjust the mic to your height. You can read from your phone, a paper, or speak off the top of your head.
You have 3 minutes. The light system on the podium helps track your time: Green: start, Yellow: 30 secs, Red: stop.
When finished, you can return to your sit or leave.
This is an example of what you’ll hear when your name is called.

For safety reasons, you can chose to put any iteration of your name (such as Jane Doe, Jane D., Jane, or J.D.). If you’re a student, write and circle “STUDENT” in capital letters at the type of your card.
Speaker cards will be passed out when doors open. You must remain in line to get a card.
You can only turn in cards for one person (one name). For example, if you're not speaking, you can turn in the speaker card of a friend while they find a seat.
Two district staff memebrs will be collecting the filled out cards.
Writing tips
This is a policy - so avoid using words like “bill” or “resolution”
Stuck? Ask yourself:
How will this affect students safety?
How will this affect you and those you know?
How will this affect teacher-student relationships?
Time yourself to see if you meet the 3 minute limit.
You can cite statistics in your comment.
